Puttur (ಪುತ್ತೂರು) is the headquarters of its taluk in Dakshina Kannada, about 52 km south-east of Mangaluru. Much of its trade grows out of the farms around it. Areca is bought and sold here at the Campco market and by private traders; in 2020, for example, the new crop reached them in the first week of October. In the middle of town stands the Shree Mahalingeshwara temple, which dates back to the 12th century.
Two farm institutions give Puttur an unusual profile for a town its size. CAMPCO, the areca and cocoa growers' co-operative, opened a chocolate factory here in 1986. It makes chocolate under its own brand and also for Nestlé. At Darbe, the ICAR Directorate of Cashew Research works on new varieties, crop care, pest control and processing. So the town sees growers, researchers, suppliers and factory staff as well as shoppers, and all of them check a business on the phone first.
Listen at any Puttur counter and you will hear several languages. Most people in the taluk grew up speaking Tulu. Malayalam comes second, because families have moved in from Kerala over many years, followed by Kannada and Beary. Havyaka families speak their own Havigannada dialect. So one customer may read a Kannada signboard, chat in Tulu at the counter and send a Malayalam voice note in the evening. Words on a website or listing should be simple enough to work for all of them.
The town's calendar is easy to plan around. The temple's Brahmarathotsava, the car festival, was held in mid-April in 2025, and more than 50,000 devotees were served the community feast that day. In the monsoon, the Kumaradhara and Netravati rise around Uppinangady, and crowds gather on the banks to watch the two rivers meet. Kabaka Puttur station has trains towards Mangaluru and the coast, and up the ghats to Mysuru, Bengaluru and Hubballi. These dates and routes shape when people go looking for a shop, a room or a meal.
