Karkala (ಕಾರ್ಕಳ), called Karla in Tulu, takes its name from kari-kal, black stone, and granite shows up everywhere, from the hills to the temples. It is the headquarters of Karkala taluk and one of Karnataka's important Jain centres. The 42-foot monolithic Bahubali on Gommata Betta was consecrated on 13 February 1432, and the granite Chaturmukha Basadi of 1586 faces it from the hill opposite. The Archaeological Survey of India protects both, along with the manastambha at Hiriyangadi.
It is a town of many languages. Tulu is the native tongue, Kannada is the official language, and Konkani and Dakhni are also widely spoken. Karkala has Hindu temples, Jain basadis, mosques and churches, and the Tuluva calendar runs through the year with Bhuta Kola, Nagaradhane, Yakshagana and the Kambala buffalo races, which are held in muddy paddy fields between November and March.
January belongs to Attur. The St Lawrence church at Attur, in Nitte village, was built in 1845, and its annual feast brings together people of every faith; in 2026 the feast ran from 25 to 29 January, with 36 Masses in Konkani and 9 in Kannada. A bigger moment is close. From 18 to 28 February 2027, Karkala hosts the Mahamastakabhisheka of Bahubali, held once every 12 years, and organisers are preparing for a large turnout of devotees.
Karkala is a study town as well. Nitte, about 7 km away on the Padubidri road, has the NMAM Institute of Technology, a polytechnic, PU and degree colleges and other Nitte institutions, and the town itself has colleges such as Bhuvanendra College. Students, and the parents who come to see them, need rooms, meals, transport, books and services right through the academic year.
The roads make it a stopover. NH-169 passes through, State Highway 1 links Karkala to NH-66 at Padubidri, and a wide bus network connects it to Udupi and Mangaluru. Karkala lies on the way to Sringeri, Horanadu, Kalasa, Kollur, Subrahmanya and Dharmasthala, so pilgrims on temple circuits pass through. The nearest railhead is Udupi, and the nearest airport is at Bajpe, near Mangaluru.
