In short

What does a web design company do?

A web design company plans, writes, designs and builds a business website, puts it live on the owner's domain and keeps it working after launch. The job covers the pages, the words, the look, loading speed on phones and the details Google reads. Whirl Designs does this from its studio in Udupi for shops and firms from Kundapura to Mangaluru, with every account in the owner's name.

Builder, WordPress, Shopify or hand-built?

The platform matters less than the pages on it, but it decides who can edit the site and how much looking after it needs. These are the four usual routes.

A do-it-yourself builder

Best for: A simple one-page site you can set up this week

  • You choose a template and fill in your own details
  • The site lives on that builder, and moving it later is hard
  • Good for a few pages, limited once you need many

WordPress

Best for: Staff who publish news, posts or offers every week

  • A familiar editor that anyone on your team can learn
  • Plugins add features, and each one has to be kept updated
  • Suits news sites, blogs and businesses that change often

Shopify

Best for: Selling products online, with payments and delivery

  • Cart, payment and order screens come ready to use
  • Add-on apps extend it, and each one is one more account
  • Suits a shop where selling online is the main job

Built by hand for you

Best for: Many similar pages, or speed above everything

  • A page for every product, room or route, made from one list
  • Fewer add-ons to update, so fewer things can break
  • Changes beyond text and photos come back to us

If a simple builder site is enough for now, you will hear that from us, along with the search settings worth getting right on it.

A 190-page site built around real searches

Padmavathi Tours & Travels is a chauffeur-hire company in Udupi. Before the rebuild, the business had almost no presence online, while its customers were typing searches for a particular vehicle, route or town.

We rebuilt it as a 190-page site that answers the exact searches those customers type: every vehicle, every route and every town has its own page. The site takes enquiries, not online bookings, and the owner's phone is alerted the moment an enquiry comes in.

  • One data file holds the routes and vehicles, and their pages are built from it
  • Structured data for vehicles, trips and FAQs, so Google can read them
  • Customer reviews shown in a live carousel
  • Built in PHP 8, with the content kept in files, not a database

What you get

What you get with every website

All six are listed in the written plan, so you can tick each one off on launch day.

  1. Pages planned from real questionsBefore any design, we list what customers type into Google and ask you on the phone, and give each important question a page or a clear answer. Pages that nobody looks for are left out.
  2. The words, written with youMost websites stall while they wait for text. We talk to you, write the pages in plain English, or in Kannada as well if you want both, and you correct them. You also get a list of the photos each page needs; you or a photographer you choose take them, because real pictures of your place beat stock ones.
  3. A design made for your tradeNot a template with your logo dropped in. A homestay needs big photos, a clinic needs doctors and timings up front, a trader needs a clear product list. The layout follows what your customer comes to find.
  4. Quick on an ordinary phoneEvery page is checked on a mid-range Android phone over mobile data, with images sized to match. Call, WhatsApp, directions and enquiry buttons sit where a thumb can reach them.
  5. Groundwork for Google and AI searchEach page gets its own title and description. Hidden labels, called structured data, tell Google your address, hours, services and FAQs. A sitemap goes to Google, Search Console and Analytics are set up so you can see visits and enquiries, and a short file tells AI assistants what you do.
  6. Training, and help after itOne session with whoever will edit the site, on your own pages, plus a short written guide. After launch, the people who built the site repair anything that breaks, keep it up to date and make small changes, and you reach them directly.

How it runs

From first call to a live site

Most of the time goes into planning and writing. Once the words are settled, the build itself moves quickly.

  1. See how customers reach you

Meet us at the Udupi studio, or we come to your shop or office in Manipal, Mangaluru, Karkala or Kundapura; a phone call works too. We look at where customers find you today, what they call to ask, and what a good enquiry looks like for you.

  2. A written plan with every page

Every page, what it says and what it asks the visitor to do, with the platform and the dates. Nothing is designed until you have signed the plan off.

  3. Words and design together

We write and design each page at the same time, so the layout fits your real text instead of filler. You review both on your own phone.

  4. Built on a private test link

The site goes up on a test address only you can see. You and your staff click through it, try the enquiry form and call buttons, and list anything that needs changing.

  5. Launch on your domain

The site moves to your own address, and the forms, call buttons and speed are tested again there, because hosting can change how a page behaves. The sitemap goes to Google the same day.

  6. Check the first weeks together

Together we read Google Search Console, Google's report on your site: which searches show it, and which pages Google has not picked up yet. Problems it shows are fixed, and support carries on.

Not a fit

When a website is not the first thing to fix

We would rather say this at the first meeting than after launch.

  • Customers find you on Google Maps and walk straight in. Complete your Google Business Profile with photos, timings and reviews first; the website can follow.
  • Nobody has time to answer enquiries. A site that fills an inbox no one reads loses customers, so decide who replies, and how quickly, before we build.
  • You want the same page copied for 200 towns with only the name changed. Google treats those as doorway pages, and we do not make them.
  • It must be live in three days. A one-page holding site can be; a site that answers real searches needs your input and a few rounds of review.

Questions

Questions about getting a website

How long does a business website take to build?

Most business websites take three to six weeks from the first call to going live. The biggest factor is usually the words and photos, not the building: pages wait while answers are gathered. Larger sites, with many service, product or route pages made from a list, take longer, and the written plan gives you the dates.

Do I need a website if I already use Instagram?

Usually yes, if you want new customers to find you. Instagram reaches people who already follow you, but a Google search for your service in Udupi or Mangaluru mostly shows websites and Google Business Profiles, not posts. A website is also yours: an account can be locked or lose reach, while your domain stays in your name. Keep posting, and link the two.

Will my website show up on Google?

Yes, Google can find and list it, usually within a few days to a few weeks of launch once the sitemap is sent. Ranking high for a busy search, such as 'homestay in Malpe', is earned over months and depends on other businesses, your Google Business Profile and your reviews as well as the site, so nobody can honestly promise a position. A good site gives Google one clear page for each thing you offer.

Can I update the website myself?

Yes. You get a simple editing screen, or the WordPress editor if the site runs on WordPress, for changing text, photos, timings and offers without touching any code. Bigger changes, such as a new section or a new kind of page, we do for you.

Who owns the domain, hosting and website?

You do. The domain and hosting are registered to your business, and so are Google Search Console, Analytics and your Business Profile. If you do not have a domain yet, we help you register one in your name. We work on these accounts as your developer, so if you ever move to someone else, you already hold every login and we hand over the code.

Will a redesign lose our Google rankings?

It should not, if the move is planned. Before launch we list every page Google already knows, keep the same addresses where we can, and point each old address to its new page with a permanent (301) redirect, which tells Google the page has moved. We also keep the words that were bringing visitors in. After launch we watch Search Console for pages that dropped out and fix them.

Can the website be in Kannada as well as English?

Yes. A site can run fully in Kannada, fully in English, or in both with a language switch, so customers read the language they searched in. We built Times of Karkala, a news portal in Karkala that publishes every day in Kannada and English, with Kannada typography that stays readable.

What do you need from us to get started?

An hour to talk about your business and the customers you want more of. After that, your answers to our questions for each page, your logo if you have one, and photos of your place, products or team; we tell you exactly which shots. If you have an old website, access to its domain helps us keep what already works.
