Every order, job and customer in one web app

We build web apps for businesses in coastal Karnataka: customer and dealer portals, order tracking and staff tools that run in any browser. Our studio is in Udupi, and the people who build your app stay on after launch.

In short

What is a web application?

A web application is business software that runs in a web browser, usually behind a login, so nothing has to be installed. Customers can place and track orders, staff update jobs, and owners approve work and read reports, all from the same live records. Whirl Designs, a studio in Udupi, builds web applications for businesses in Udupi, Mangaluru and across coastal Karnataka.

A website, a ready-made tool, or a web app?

Many people who ask for a web app need something smaller. Here are three options, and the kind of work each one suits.

A website with a form

Best for: Being found and getting enquiries

  • Shows your products, services and contact details
  • Enquiries reach you by email or on your phone
  • No logins, nothing for staff to learn

A ready-made online tool

Best for: Everyday tasks most businesses handle alike

  • Invoicing, appointments and forms already exist as products
  • Sign up and it is ready to use within days
  • Your process has to fit the tool, not the other way round

A web app built for you

Best for: Work with several steps, people and logins

  • Customers, staff and managers each get their own screens
  • Your statuses, rules and reports are built in
  • Starts small and grows one part at a time

Rebar — Construction ERP
Construction ERP · Private system

Read the full case study →

Rebar is a construction ERP for reinforcement-steel contractors, and one of the products of ERP Sutra, our own product arm. It is a private web application that opens in the browser behind a login. The work it covers starts on site, with bar bending schedules and the steel used at each site, and carries on into sub-contractor bills, retention and weekly labour runs.

The statutory filings that follow are built in too: PF ECR, ESI and Form 24Q output, and an income-tax engine whose slabs are stored as data, so when the slabs change, the data changes and the program does not. Backups cover both the database and the files, with checksums that show each copy is complete, and a restore has been tested end to end.

  • Bar bending schedules and steel consumption, site by site
  • Sub-contractor billing and retention in the same system
  • Weekly labour runs, plus PF ECR, ESI and Form 24Q output
  • Backups of the database and files with checksums, and a restore tested end to end

What you get

What comes with every web app

Most of this never shows in a demo. It is what keeps the app working on an ordinary Monday a year from now.

  1. Logins and rolesEvery person signs in with their own account. A customer sees only their own orders, a counter clerk sees today's jobs, and the owner sees everything.
  2. Screens that fit each deviceLaid out for the office computer, then checked on the ordinary Android phones your staff and customers carry, over mobile data rather than office Wi-Fi.
  3. The steps of your workEach status a job passes through, who may move it on, and what happens next. We agree these rules with you, and the app follows them.
  4. Messages when things changeA job is ready, an approval is waiting, a bill is due: the right person hears by email, a phone notification or a WhatsApp message sent from an approved template.
  5. Links to your other toolsTally or other accounting software, a payment gateway, GST invoicing or courier tracking, connected where those systems allow it, so records move across without retyping.
  6. Hosting and a tested restoreMost business apps run well on ordinary shared hosting, and a private server (a VPS) comes in only when the load needs one. The account is in your name, backups run every day, and a full restore is tried before launch.

How it runs

How a web app gets built

You can log in to a test copy from the early weeks, so the finished app holds no surprises.

  1. Follow one real job

With you and your staff, we trace one order or request from the first call to the final bill, and note every step, person and paper it touches.

  2. A written plan with sketches

Every role, status, screen and report goes on paper, with rough screens you can click through. Coding starts only after you sign it off.

  3. A private test link, every week

Each week's work goes up at a private address. Your team tries it on their own phones and computers and tells us what feels wrong.

  4. Bring your data across

Customers, items and open jobs move in from your spreadsheets. Staff practise on their real jobs, and the switch happens on a quiet day.

  5. Looked after once it is live

When something needs fixing or a new part is wanted, you call the people who wrote the code, so nothing has to be explained from the start.

Not a fit

When a web app is the wrong answer

Saying so early saves you months.

  • Your real goal is more calls from Google search. A quick-loading site and a well-kept Google Business Profile will bring those calls; a web app will not.
  • Two people share one spreadsheet and it works. Keep it until it starts to break, then come back.
  • Nobody in the business will own the app. Someone has to decide the rules and answer staff questions, or it quietly stops being used.
  • You want a copy of a huge platform, like a food-delivery or ride-hailing service, for thousands of users on day one. That needs a far larger team than one studio.

Questions

Questions people ask about web apps

What is the difference between a website and a web application?

A website mainly shows information to anyone who visits; a web application lets people log in and get work done. On a print shop's website you read about its services. In its web app you upload a file, approve a proof and see when the job is ready. Many businesses need both: the website brings the enquiry, and the web app handles everything after it.

How long does it take to build a web application?

Plan on six to ten weeks for the first working part, such as order entry and tracking. More roles, online payments or links to other software stretch a full app to three to six months. Because it is built in stages, your team uses the early parts while the later ones are still being made.

Should we build a web app or a mobile app?

For most business tools, start with a web app. It runs on phones and computers, updates for everyone at once, and staff can pin it to their phone's home screen. Nityanand Agro's staff bill and manage stock from a web app they added that way, and it is now being made into a Play Store app too, with no rewrite. A store app is worth it when customers open it every week.

Can our customers log in and check their own orders?

Yes. A customer portal is one of the most useful parts of a web app. Customers sign in with a mobile number or email, see their orders, bills and status, and download documents, so fewer calls come in asking where things stand. Dealers can get the same kind of login, with their own catalogue and order history.

Which technology do you use for web applications?

We mostly build in PHP 8 with a MariaDB or MySQL database. Both run well on ordinary hosting and many developers know them, so the app is never tied to us. Where the job or your current systems need it, we use React or Next.js, Node.js or ASP.NET Core instead.

How do you keep a web application secure?

It is secured in layers, built in from the first screen rather than added at the end. The app runs over HTTPS (the padlock in the browser), passwords are stored scrambled, never as plain text, and every page checks who is signed in and what they may see. A log records who changed what, and updates and backups carry on after launch.

Will we own the code and the data?

Yes. The code, the database, the domain and the hosting account all belong to your business, and documentation comes with them at handover. Whether we keep supporting the app or another developer takes it over is your decision.

Can we meet you in person in Udupi or Mangaluru?

Yes. Our studio is in Udupi, and we meet businesses in Manipal, Mangaluru, Karkala and Kundapura to sit with the people who will use the app. Menus and labels can be in Kannada, in English or side by side, and we test the Kannada text on your staff's own phones.
