Hebri (ಹೆಬ್ರಿ) became a taluk in 2018, carved out of Karkala taluk, and it sits at the foot of the Western Ghats on the road up to Agumbe. It is a junction first: roads meet here from Udupi, Brahmavar, Karkala, Kundapura, Mangaluru, Agumbe and Shivamogga. NH-169A, which runs from Malpe to Thirthahalli, passes through the town, and its Malpe–Hebri stretch is being widened to four lanes. Tulu and Kundagannada are the everyday languages.
Most of the money comes from the land. Farmers here grow paddy, areca, coconut and cashew, and rubber has spread along the foothills. In and around Hebri, factories process cashew, coconut and rice, especially parboiled rice. The town also has schools, colleges and a community health centre. So behind the scenery that visitors drive through, Hebri is a working market town for the farms around it.
East of town, the forest takes over. The Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary, below Agumbe, shelters the king cobra, the lion-tailed macaque and the Malabar pied hornbill, and Hebri is its nearest town, with daily buses to Udupi, Mangaluru and Bengaluru. The Karnataka Forest Department runs the Sitanadi nature camp inside it. The Sita river flows past Hebri and forms falls such as Kudlu, Barkana and Jomlu Theertha, and rafting on it runs from June to October in coordination with government agencies.
Two facts shape how goods and visitors move. The ghat stretch of NH-169A from Someshwara to Agumbe is narrow, and only mini buses and mini lorries are allowed on it, so anything going up the ghat travels in small vehicles. And the rain is heavy: Agumbe, just above, is called the Cherrapunji of South India. Monsoon is the rafting season on the Sita, so a nature business here plans its busiest months around the rain.
Quieter heritage sits close by. Kere Basadi at Varanga, about 9 km from Hebri, is a 12th-century Jain temple in the middle of a lake, reached by a short boat ride, and its chariot festival runs for five days every February. Perdoor, on the Udupi road, has an Anantha Padmanabha temple said to be more than a thousand years old, whose car festival usually falls on 16 March.
