Byndoor (ಬೈಂದೂರು) became a taluk of its own in February 2018, when it was carved out of Kundapura taluk, and it sits at the northern end of Udupi district, where Uttara Kannada begins. On the Konkan Railway, Shiroor is the taluk's stop nearest Bhatkal, and Mookambika Road Byndoor is the next one down the line. Kundagannada is the common speech, and in villages such as Uppunda Konkani is spoken too. The taluk runs from fishing beaches through paddy villages like Hadavu to forest at the foot of the Western Ghats.
Its biggest draw is Kollur. The Mookambika temple there stands on the southern bank of the Souparnika at the foot of the Kodachadri hills, inside Byndoor taluk, and most of its devotees come from Kerala. Its main festivals are Navaratri in the month of Ashwin and the chariot festival in Phalguna. Mookambika Road Byndoor station, opened in 1997, mainly serves these pilgrims, and Kollur is about 28 km inland from Byndoor. Every lodge, eatery and taxi on that road is, in effect, in the pilgrim business.
On the coast, Maravanthe, which Outlook Traveller called one of Karnataka's most beautiful beaches, is where NH-66 runs between the sea and the Souparnika river, and fishing is still the main work. Further north, at Ottinene beach, the Byndoor river meets the sea, and the Kshitija Nesara Dhama viewpoint looks down from the cliff above. Karnataka Tourism suggests October to March for a visit. Uppunda has its own beach and fishing families, and its Durgaparameshwari temple celebrates a Kodi Habba.
Inland, the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary takes in Kollur and the Kodachadri hills, with waterfalls such as Arasinagundi, Belkal Theertha and Koosalli nearby. Kodachadri itself lies in Shivamogga district, but visitors reach it from the Kollur side, by jeep or on foot, and the trail turns slippery in the monsoon. Since most Kollur devotees come from Kerala, a Byndoor business is often chosen from a distance, before the customer sets out.
