Surathkal (ಸುರತ್ಕಲ್) is the northern end of Mangaluru: a former municipality, now part of the city corporation, lying between the Gurupura (Phalguni) and Pavanje (Nandini) rivers. National Highway 66 runs through it, and its railway station is on the Konkan line. Within a short drive are the New Mangalore Port, about 8 km south, the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals plant at Katipalla, about 4 km away, and the Baikampady industrial estate. NITK, the National Institute of Technology Karnataka, gives Surathkal its second economy.
